Living with the brain change associated with dementia is difficult. Below are some of the resources for dementia that I have found over the years. They have helped me grow in my knowledge and skills as my husband and I navigate Alzheimer's Disease. Learning has helped me understand him better and how I can help both of us live life to the fullest.
One of the best resources I have found came from my Aunt who introduced me to Teepa Snow. Teepa has a way to taking the clinical information and presenting it to you in practical ways. She also uses her Gem State system to help you focus on what a person living with brain changes due to dementia can do rather than what they can't do. You can find resources for family and organizations on her website Teepasnow.com
A friend shared this Dementia Caregiver Survival Guide with me. It is published by the VA. One of the most enlightening parts of the guide for me was their information on ANOSOGNOSIA or simply the 'lack of awareness' for many living with dementia (page 8). Up until I read guide, I was often frustrated with my husband and thought "How can you not know you have a problem?" Now I understand that it's part of the disease. Although it can still be frustrating!
VA medical benefits have been a lifesaver for us. The VA has several resources available to our Veterans who are living with dementia. You can apply online, in person, by phone or by mail. Visit their website to learn more about what you will need to apply and for more information on the various ways you can apply for benefits.
